Gas Turbine Training

PMAOPS331 – Operate and troubleshoot gas turbine system

This unit develops the skills and knowledge required to operate complex gas turbine systems in power generation, compression, and related industries. Operators perform specialised startup and shutdown procedures, monitor equipment performance, and work independently or within teams while coordinating with control-room personnel, ensuring compliance with Australian legislation, standards, and industry practices.

Course Overview

This unit covers the skills and knowledge required to operate complex, independent gas turbine systems used in power generation, compression, and similar industrial applications. It includes the operation of specialised startup and shutdown procedures, control panels, and vibration monitoring equipment. The unit applies to autonomous operators who possess a strong understanding of both process and equipment operations, working either independently or in coordination with control-room personnel. In larger and more complex facilities, operators may work as part of a team during critical operational activities. The role requires effective communication with shift personnel and adherence to all relevant Australian legislation, industry standards, licensing requirements, and codes of practice.

Unit Code: PMAOPS331

Training Type: Operate and troubleshoot gas turbine system

Duration: 2 Days

Delivery: Classroom & Practical

Course Outline

01

Operate gas turbine system according to procedure

Receive and deliver shift handovers, coordinate work requirements with personnel, identify and report hazards, review maintenance activities, verify system status, perform routine inspections and documentation, and adjust the gas turbine system in accordance with approved operating parameters.

02

Identify and respond to abnormal situations during operation

Continuously monitor the gas turbine system using sensory observations, field data, and instrumentation, assess upstream and downstream impacts, identify and respond to actual or potential abnormal conditions in accordance with operating procedures, and accurately document corrective actions and incident management activities.

03

Shut down and prepare gas turbine system for maintenance

Prepare and safely shut down the gas turbine system in accordance with operating procedures, conduct pre-shutdown checks, manage and report hazards, monitor and respond to abnormal conditions, perform equipment changeovers, and isolate the system from all relevant energy sources.

04

Prepare and start gas turbine system

De-isolate, prepare, and start up the gas turbine system in accordance with operating procedures, conduct pre-start checks, identify and manage startup hazards, monitor system performance, and respond effectively to any abnormal operating conditions.
