Process Plant
Operations

Process Plant Operations covers monitoring and operating process plant safely: reading process data and instrumentation, running equipment within its limits, handling upsets and alarms, troubleshooting and keeping accurate records. It is for process and production operators, refinery, gas processing, chemical and mineral processing workers, and control room staff.

About this course

A process plant is a facility where raw materials are turned into products through a series of controlled processes: refineries, gas processing plants, chemical and petrochemical plants, mineral processing operations, power stations, water treatment, food and pharmaceutical manufacturing. Running one well means keeping the process inside its limits, catching a deviation before it becomes an upset, and knowing what to do when it does.

The course is designed for personnel in refineries, chemical processing, manufacturing and industrial operations. It focuses on monitoring plant performance, responding to operating issues, keeping equipment efficient and reliable, and meeting workplace safety requirements. It covers process monitoring, troubleshooting, equipment management and the safety practices used across industrial processing environments.

Who it is for

  • Process plant and production operators
  • Refinery and gas processing workers
  • Chemical processing and manufacturing personnel
  • Mineral processing plant operators
  • Control room operators and technicians
  • Workers entering the heavy industrial, oil and gas, chemical and manufacturing sectors

What it covers

  1. Introduction to process plant operations.Plant systems, processes and the operator's responsibilities.
  2. Plant monitoring techniques.Production parameters, process variables and equipment performance.
  3. Equipment operation.Monitoring and controlling plant equipment under normal operating conditions.
  4. Process control systems.Process control systems and instrumentation; reading system data, alarms and control room displays.
  5. Troubleshooting procedures.Identifying operating issues and putting corrective actions in place.
  6. Efficiency and reliability.Keeping the plant running efficiently and the equipment reliable; preventive maintenance and calibration awareness.
  7. Safety and risk management.Workplace safety procedures, hazard identification, PPE, risk assessment, isolation, lockout and tagout.
  8. Emergency response procedures.Responding to process upsets, alarms and emergency situations.
  9. Operational documentation.Recording operating data and keeping accurate reports.
  10. Practical assessment.Hands-on plant operation and monitoring activities.

What you will be able to do

  • Understand how industrial process plant systems fit together
  • Monitor plant operations and interpret process data and plant indicators
  • Identify operating abnormalities and manage process deviations
  • Operate equipment safely and within its limits
  • Apply troubleshooting procedures and root cause thinking to faults
  • Understand shutdown and start-up sequences
  • Respond to emergencies
  • Keep accurate operating records
  • Support plant efficiency and continuous improvement

Why it matters

Good process plant operation is what keeps the workplace safe, product quality consistent, downtime low, equipment reliable, and the plant inside its regulatory and environmental limits. The skills that make the difference are diagnostic: reading an abnormal trend early, understanding what a deviation means upstream and downstream, and acting before it becomes an incident. That is where the course puts its weight.

Where this applies

Oil and gas (refinery processes, pipelines and control systems), mining (processing plants, mineral extraction and material handling), chemical manufacturing (reaction control, temperature monitoring and safety compliance), food processing and large-scale industrial facilities. Roles include process plant operator, production operator, chemical plant operator, utilities operator, plant controller, refinery operator, control room technician and operations technician.

Assessment

Assessment may include practical demonstrations, written assessments, scenario-based troubleshooting tasks and safety compliance evaluations. Participants must show competence in both operating and monitoring the plant and in the safety procedures that go with it.

Frequently
asked questions

Is this the same as the gas turbine course?

No. Gas turbine training is specific to operating and troubleshooting a gas turbine system. Process plant operations covers monitoring and operating the wider plant. Many operators do both.
