Unattended
Boiler
Operation
Unattended Boiler Operation is training for the people who look after a boiler that is set up to run for periods with nobody in the boiler house. It covers the checks, function tests and records that let the boiler run safely on its own, and what to do when it alarms or locks out.
About this course
Plenty of site boilers are not watched around the clock. AS 2593, the Australian Standard for boiler safety management and supervision systems, sets out the requirements for running a boiler with or without an operator in attendance, and the checking, testing and maintenance each mode needs.
When nobody is standing at the boiler, the automatic controls and safety devices are doing the watching. That only works if the people responsible for the boiler know what each device protects against, test it the way the site's procedures require, record the result and act on anything that fails. This course is built around that job.
Who it is for
- Operators and plant staff responsible for a boiler that runs without an operator on hand for some or all of the time
- Maintenance technicians who test the cut-outs, safety devices and alarms
- Supervisors and safety staff who sign off boiler logbooks and test records
- Personnel at power stations, mine sites and process plants that run a boiler without a full-time operator
What it covers
- Modes of attendance. How AS 2593 treats a boiler run with an operator in attendance and one run unattended, and what changes when the operator is not on hand.
- The devices that stand in for the operator.Water level controls and low water cut-outs, flame safeguards and burner management, pressure limits, safety valves, and the alarms that call a person in.
- Routine checks. What gets checked at each visit, how to read the boiler's condition from its gauges and sight glasses, and how to spot a problem before it trips the boiler.
- Function testing.Proving that the cut-outs and safety devices actually work, safely and in the right order, as the site's procedures set out.
- Water treatment and blowdown. Why water chemistry matters more when the boiler runs on its own, and how to carry out blowdown correctly.
- Alarms, trips and lockouts.Responding to an alarm, finding the cause before a reset, and deciding when a boiler should stay off.
- Start-up, shutdown and isolation.Bringing the boiler back into service and taking it out safely.
- Logbooks and records.Keeping the test and inspection records the safety management system depends on.
What you will be able to do
- Explain how a boiler is set up to run unattended and what each safety device does
- Carry out and record routine checks on an unattended boiler
- Test low water cut-outs and other safety devices safely
- Respond to an alarm or lockout and find the cause before any reset
- Keep the logbooks and test records the site's safety management system relies on
Frequently
asked questions
Is this a high risk work licence?
No. In Western Australia the boiler licence classes are standard boiler and advanced boiler. Unattended Boiler Operation is training in looking after a boiler that runs without an operator on hand, not a licence class.
Do the people looking after our boiler also need a boiler licence?
It depends on the boiler and how your site runs it. Call Glen and he will talk it through with you before you book.
Can you run it at our site?
Ask Glen when you request a quote and he will tell you what is possible for your site.
