Standard Boiler
Operation

Standard Boiler Operation is the entry-level boiler licence course: it covers a boiler with a single fuel source and no pre-heater, superheater or economiser attached. It is for anyone who needs to operate that class of boiler on a power station, mine site, refinery, processing plant or factory, whether they're new to boilers or an experienced operator who needs the formal ticket.

About this course

A standard boiler is a pressure vessel that generates steam or hot water above atmospheric pressure from a single fuel source. Because it runs at high pressure and temperature, mishandling one can mean an explosion, equipment damage or serious injury, which is why standard boiler operation is a licensed class of high risk work.

This course gives you the skills and knowledge to operate and monitor a standard boiler safely: pre-start checks, start-up and shutdown, monitoring pressure, temperature and water levels, routine inspections, water treatment, keeping operating records, responding to faults and emergencies, and the work health and safety obligations that come with the job. It is written for both beginners entering the industry and experienced operators who need formal certification.

Who it is for

  • Aspiring boiler operators and entry-level technical learners
  • Industrial plant operators and utilities workers
  • Maintenance technicians who cover boiler operation
  • Energy sector, mining, manufacturing and food processing personnel
  • Safety and operations staff who need to understand the plant they supervise

What it covers

  1. Introduction to standard boiler systems.Boiler types (fire-tube and water-tube), components and functions, basic thermodynamics and how steam is generated.
  2. Boiler start-up.Pre-start checks and a safe start-up sequence: initial firing, warm-up, pressure build.
  3. Operational controls.Monitoring temperatures, pressures, water levels and system performance; gauges, valves and control systems.
  4. Routine inspections.Regular inspections, leak detection and identifying operating issues early.
  5. Boiler maintenance requirements.Operator-level maintenance, equipment care and preventive maintenance schedules.
  6. Safety systems and controls.Safety devices, alarms, pressure relief and emergency shutdown systems.
  7. Hazard identification and risk control.Recognising hazards and putting workplace safety measures in place.
  8. Shutdown procedures.Safe shutdown and isolation.
  9. Emergency response.Responding to faults, alarms and emergency situations.
  10. Practical assessment.Hands-on boiler operation and competency assessment.

What you will be able to do

  • Safely operate a standard industrial boiler, under supervision or independently
  • Monitor operating conditions and read what the gauges are telling you
  • Identify and respond to safety hazards
  • Carry out routine inspections and operator-level maintenance tasks
  • Keep accurate operating records
  • Comply with Australian work health and safety regulations

What is a standard boiler?

A standard boiler has a single fuel source and no pre-heater, superheater or economiser attached. You find them in manufacturing and processing plants, mining operations, refineries, power generation, utilities, food production and chemical plants. If the boiler on your site burns more than one fuel or has any of those fittings, it is an advanced boiler and needs the advanced boiler licence class; see the advanced boiler operation course.

Licensing exists because of the way boilers fail. Operators need to understand pressure control, fuel and combustion, water level management, emergency shutdown, and how to recognise a problem while there is still time to act.

Safety and practical work

Safety is the point of the licence. Training covers WHS legislation, risk assessment, emergency shutdown protocols and PPE, and then puts them to work on the boiler: operating the controls, handling live pressure, monitoring in real time and responding to simulated emergencies.

Where this applies

Standard boilers run across power plants, refineries, mining operations, manufacturing and food processing. Roles that call for this licence include boiler operator, plant operator, maintenance technician, industrial equipment operator, energy plant technician and manufacturing process operator.

Frequently
asked questions

Is this the right course if I have never operated a boiler?

Yes. The course is designed for beginners entering the industry as well as experienced operators who need formal certification.

What if the boiler on my site has a superheater, or burns two fuels?

Then it is an advanced boiler, and you need the advanced boiler operation course. The advanced licence class also covers standard boilers.
